He Was In His Truck

crate-motor-guide-1973-2013-gmcchevy-trucks13Sunday night at a kids leadership event, we learned to sing Bible truths to familiar tunes. We practiced singing

God allows us to make right and wrong choices

to “She’ll Be Coming Around the Mountain.”

Try it! You can do it!  I promised the leaders at some point this week, the song will come to mind.

Today I went on a walk. Something prompted me to go to the elementary school near our house. Begrudgingly, I made the turn and noticed my neighbor’s truck. I thought it was empty or abandoned. As I approached, I saw his curly hair sticking up behind the window.

I was so excited! He was in his truck. He recently moved so we haven’t talked in awhile. He’s such a great kid & I love trying to encourage him. He wrestles with life, temptation, and past hurts which have led to some unwise decisions. He shared his new plan for the future which includes college and how he can achieve the goal. We talked about overcoming distractions and unnecessary friends. In the middle of our conversation, he said, “I feel like this is my last chance. I’ve made so many really bad choices but I am going to do the right thing.”

Immediately it hit me, God allows us to make right and wrong choices. The familiar tune flooded my head. I was able to tell him that God loves him and wants him to have a future. God allows us to make right and wrong choices. We have to choose what’s wise. He agreed.  We prayed together and I continued my walk.

It was a powerful moment. I was blown away at how God uses scripture in our lives. With a huge smile, I hummed all the way home, not, “She’ll be Coming Around the Mountain,” but “God allows us to make right and wrong choices.”

Wise choices will watch over you. Understanding will keep you safe. Proverbs 2:11 NLT

God I’m so sorry for the wrong choices I have made. I want to do what pleases you. Give me the strength to do what is right even when it’s hard. And God please give my buddy the strength he needs to make wise choices.
