Dear Brody

“I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.” John 16:33

The first time I held you, Brody, when no one else was around my heart melted. There we were. Me and you – our first time together with no distractions. Your little nose was so cute. Your round little cheeks so soft. Your toes and fingers the tiniest I’d seen.

As I held you close, I realized, your heart hasn’t been broken. Your mind hasn’t been tainted. Even though you are human, you are the nearest thing to perfection. I wondered who would say mean things to you. I thought about the pain you’ll experience- maybe hurt, loss, or rejection. I wanted to protect you. Right in that moment. Put you in a bubble and protect you from the big, cruel world. But I can’t, Brody. As deeply as my heart desires, I can’t protect you from other people, hard experiences, or even yourself.

The only thing I can do is give you the one who can. The only one who can save you from yourself and the world. The only one who can satisfy your longings and meet your every need. The only one who could possibly love you more than me.

Brody, that day, just me and you together, I prayed for you to find Jesus. He truly is the only thing you will ever need. Once you find him, life will still hurt. You will struggle within yourself. Pain will come. But you, Brody, will overcome it all, because you will know the one who has overcome.
